Howes, Jeremiah & Sarah Prence

My 9th-great-grandfather, Jeremiah Howes, son of Thomas & Mary (—) Howes, was born c. 1637 at sea, and died 9 December 1708 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. He married c. 1656, his step-sister, Sarah Prence, who died 3 March 1707 in Yarmouth, daughter of Thomas Prence.

Sarah’s father, Gov. Thomas Prence, married Jeremiah’s mother, Mary (—) Howes, sometime between 26 February 1665 and 1 August 1668, about a decade after Sarah & Jeremiah had been married. They lie buried in Howes Family Cemetery in Dennis, Massachusetts.

Jeremiah & Sarah were the parents of twelve children:

1. Jeremiah Howes (my 8th-great-grandfather), was born c. 1657, died 6 January 1706 in Yarmouth. He married 18 October 1693, Mary Daggett, who was born c. 1668, and died c. 1712, daughter of Thomas & Hannah (Mayhew) Daggett.

2. Elizabeth Howes, born c. 1661, died before 23 July 1725. She married 10 December 1686, Jeremiah Bacon, who was born 8 May 1657, and died December 1706, son of Nathaniel & Hannah (Mayo) Bacon.

3. Thomas Howes, born c. 1663, died 1 June 1700 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. He married (as her first husband) 5 April 1700 in Nantucket, Massachusetts, Abigail Hussey, who was born there 22 December 1679, and died there 26 April 1763, daughter of Stephen & Martha (Bunker) Hussey.

4. Sarah Howes, born c. 1667, died 14 June 1715 in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. She married c. 1684, Daniel Mayo, who was born 24 June 1664 in Orleans, Massachusetts, and died 14 June 1715 in Wellfleet, son of John & Hannah (Lecraft) Mayo.

5. Prence Howes, born c. 1669, died 2 October 1753 in Yarmouth. He married 8 August 1695 in Yarmouth, Dorcas Joyce, who was born there 31 March 1674, and died there 14 November 1757, daughter of Hosea & Elizabeth (Chipman) Joyce.

6. Mary Howes, born c. 1672, died 10 January 1729 in Yarmouth. She married (as his first wife) c. 1695, Joseph Hawes, who was born 16 July 1673 in Yarmouth, and died there 16 November 1752, son of John & Desire (Gorham) Hawes.

7. Capt. Ebenezer Howes, born c. 1674, died 8 January 1726 in Yarmouth. He married (as his first wife) 20 April 1699 in Yarmouth, Sarah Gorham, who was born there 16 January 1679, and died there 9 September 1705, daughter of Joseph & Sarah (Sturgis) Gorham.
Ebenezer married (as his second wife) 20 November 1706 in Yarmouth, Lydia Joyce, who was born c. 1684, and died 4 November 1755 in Yarmouth, daughter of Hosea & Elizabeth (Chipman) Joyce.

8. Bethia Howes, born c. 1680, died 7 July 1748 in Chatham, Massachusetts. She married (as her first husband) 8 January 1701 in Yarmouth, Lt. Isaac Hawes, who was born there 9 March 1680, and died 18 March 1730 in Chatham, son of John & Desire (Gorham) Hawes.
Bethia married (as her second husband and as his second wife) 11 April 1741, John Smith, who was born 26 May 1673 in Eastham, Massachusetts, and died before 21 January 1743, son of John & Hannah (Williams) Smith, and widower of Sarah (Collins) Smith.

9. Mercy Howes, born c. 1681, died 28 August 1723 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. She married 17 October 1700 in Yarmouth, Samuel Sturgis, who was born c. 1670, and died 12 January 1737 in Yarmouth, son of Edward & Temperance (Gorham) Sturgis.

10. Susanna Howes, born c. 1682, died 27 February 1719 in Yarmouth. She married (as his first wife) 27 February 1707 in Yarmouth, Joseph Bassett, who was born there 25 September 1677, and died before 31 August 1737, son of Nathaniel & Dorcas (Joyce) Bassett.

11. Rebecca Howes, born c. 1687, died 23 March 1725 in Yarmouth. She married (as his first wife) 14 August 1712 in Yarmouth, Capt. Ebenezer Hallett, who was born c. 1689, and died 28 June 1760 in Yarmouth, son of Jonathan & Abigail (Dexter) Hallett.

12. Thankful Howes, born c. 1688, died before 15 February 1764. She married (as her first husband) 23 January 1707 in Yarmouth, John Miller, who was born there 16 October 1681, and died there 4 July 1729, son of John & Margaret (Winslow) Miller.
Thankful married (as her second husband and as his second wife) 2 July 1739 in Yarmouth, Ebenezer Hinckley, who was born 2 August 1685 in Barnstable, and died there 12 April 1751, son of Samuel & Mary (Fitz Randolph) Hinckley, and widower of Sarah (Lewis) Hinckley.
