Hamilton, John & Elizabeth de Peyster

Tim’s 6th-great-grandfather, John Hamilton, son of Andrew & Marie (Chalmers) Hamilton, was baptized 22 December 1681 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, and died before 21 March 1747 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He married Elizabeth de Peyster, who was born c. 1692, and died c. 1774, daughter of Abraham & Catharina (de Peyster) de Peyster.

[John Hamilton] served as acting governor of the Province of New Jersey from 1736–1738, and from 1746–1747. … In 1735 John Hamilton was appointed an assistant judge of the New Jersey Supreme Court. In 1740 he was appointed a commissioner to settle the boundary between Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He was again acting governor after the death of [Gov. Lewis Morris] in 1746.

Elizabeth & John were the parents of:

1. Stephen Hamilton (Tim’s 5th-great-grandfather), who died in July 1759 at the Battle of Ticonderoga in the French & Indian War.
