Crowell, Joseph & Sarah Howes

My 7th-great-grandfather, Joseph Crowell, son of John & Hannah (Hathaway) Crowell, was born 30 September 1696 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, and died there 14 January 1783. He married (as his first wife) 4 September 1723 in Yarmouth, Sarah Howes, who was born c. 1700, and died 18 May 1751 in Yarmouth, daughter of Jeremiah & Mary (Daggett) Howes.

Joseph married (as his second wife and as her second husband) 12 November 1752 in Yarmouth, Anne (Hallett) Whelden, who was born there 1 November 1714, and died there 18 October 1795, daughter of Ebenezer & Rebecca (Howes) Hallett, and widow of Ebenezer Whelden. Joseph and both his wives lie buried in Woodside Cemetery in West Yarmouth.

Joseph & Sarah were the parents of five children:

1. Prence Crowell, born 28 August 1724, died c. 1792. He married (as her first husband) 10 April 1756, Desire Taylor, who was born 7 May 1732 in Yarmouth, daughter of Hezekiah & Mehitable (Tobey) Taylor.

2. Joseph Crowell, baptized 21 February 1726, died 23 April 1798 in Belgrade, Maine. He married c. 1745, Temperance Crowell, who was born 12 October 1727 in Yarmouth, daughter of Ebenezer & Mercy (Gorham) Crowell.

3. Mary Crowell, born 31 December 1730 in Yarmouth. She married 13 October 1753 in Yarmouth, Barnabas Crowell, who was born there 21 February 1725, and died there 30 December 1753, son of Thomas & Experience (Crowell) Crowell.

4. Sarah Crowell (my 6th-great-grandmother), born 1 June 1732 in Yarmouth, died before 10 August 1780. She married (as his first wife) 17 March 1751 in Yarmouth, Isaac Berry, who was born there 15 August 1728, and died there 4 May 1803, son of Ebenezer & Rebecca (Eldridge) Berry.

5. Stephen Crowell, born 28 April 1737 in Yarmouth, died there 24 August 1815. He married 13 January 1769 in Yarmouth, Mercy Crowell, who was born there 1 October 1749, and died c. 1776, daughter of Ebenezer & Mercy (Gorham) Crowell.


Anne & Joseph were the parents of two sons:

1. Jeremiah Crowell, born 8 June 1756 in Yarmouth, died there 20 January 1827. He married 26 November 1778 in Yarmouth, Mary “Molly” Hallett, who was born there 18 March 1756, and died there 2 February 1840, daughter of Moses & Phebe (Hamblin) Hallett.

2. Solomon Crowell, born 19 October 1761 in Yarmouth, died there 20 October 1807.
