When I read a book I seem to read it with my eyes only, but now and then I come across a passage, perhaps only a phrase, which has a meaning for me, and it becomes part of me.
~ W. Somerset Maugham
(Of Human Bondage)
How many a man has dated a new era in his life from the reading of a book!
~ Henry David Thoreau
(Walden)
Oh, the pairing of today’s painting and quote are simply exquisite.
Thank you, Laurie! 🙂
Hi Barbara,
“A phrase which has a meaning to me” that is so true, every now and then when reading a book, this does happen, it always amazes me.
It amazes me, too, how books can be messages from a thinker in the past, a way to share thoughts with generations in the future.
Perfect! the picture is perfect for the words. We relate what we read to our lives, and it feels great. And only when we are able to relate the phrases in the book to the reality of our life, is when we actually understand the authors intent. The same applies to the blog writers & readers. Isn’t it?
That’s true, Sonali, the words in books seem to connect us over time, and the words in blogs seem to connect us over space, over the distances between us on earth. They help us to see that the reality is that we’re all one.
I come across a passage, perhaps only a phrase, which has a meaning for me, and it becomes part of me.
so, so true.
So happy these words resonated with you!
And this is why I love to read.
Me, too. And writers, how generous they are to record their thoughts even though they will never meet in person most of the people their words will comfort and inspire!
wow both the quotes hit me *smack* in my gut! Brilliant!
Love the painting too.
Some time ago you mentioned a site where one can pick up illustrations. If you don’t mind could you remind me where?
Thanks, Rosie!
Wikimedia Commons is the main one, especially for paintings:

And sometimes the National Digital Library for nature photographs:
