Shaw, Elkanah & Elizabeth Atwood

My 6th-great-grandfather, Elkanah Shaw, son of George & Mercy (Rich) Shaw, was born 21 November 1724 in Eastham, Massachusetts, and died 31 December 1805 in Middleborough, Massachusetts. He married (as his first wife) 13 October 1748 in Plympton, Massachusetts, Elizabeth Atwood, who was born there 21 November 1726, and died 19 August 1786 in Middleborough, daughter of Barnabas & Lydia (Shurtleff) Atwood.

Elkanah married (as his second wife and as her second husband) 11 November 1787 in Middleborough, Hannah (Turner) LeBaron, who was born there 30 June 1729, and died there 13 August 1807, daughter of Japheth & Elizabeth (Morse) Turner, and widow of James LeBaron.

The following is from Descendants of William Shurtleff of Plymouth and Marshfield, Massachusetts, Vol. I, by Benjamin Shurtleff:

There were in all 20 children in this family, but the names of nine of them have not been preserved.

Perhaps Elkanah’s many stepchildren are included in the count of 20 children!

Elizabeth & Elkanah were the parents of eleven children:

1. Ruth Shaw (my 5th-great-grandmother), born c. 1749, died c. 1790. She married 16 November 1769 in Middleborough, her first cousin, once removed, William Shurtleff, who was born 22 April 1743 in Plympton, and died 15 May 1790 in Middleborough, son of William & Deborah (Ransom) Shurtleff.

2. Barnabas Shaw, born c. 1749, died c. 1806.

3. Daniel Shaw, born c. 1751, died 22 March 1844 in Rochester, Vermont. He married 30 March 1777 in Middleborough, Mary Barrows, who was born 22 June 1755 in Plympton, and died 4 May 1804 in Rochester, daughter of Moses & Deborah (Totman) Barrows.

4. Frank Shaw, born c. 1753.

5. Lydia Shaw, born 30 December 1755 in Middleborough, died 30 July 1813 in Carver. She married 25 April 1776 in Middleborough, her second cousin, Lt. Joseph Shaw, who was born 8 April 1749 in Plympton, and died 4 May 1804 in Carver, son of Nathaniel & Hannah (Perkins) Shaw.

6. Martha Shaw, born c. 1758, died 18 November 1799 in Carver. She married (as his first wife) 29 October 1778 in Plympton, her third cousin, Isaac Shaw Lucas, who was born there 8 May 1757, and died 3 March 1844 in Hartford, Maine, son of Samuel & Abigail (Shaw) Lucas.

7. Marcus Shaw, born 16 July 1760 in Middleborough, died there 4 September 1806. He married (as her first husband) 26 April 1785 in Middleborough, Elizabeth Sampson, who was born there 3 February 1769, and died there 9 October 1843, daughter of John & Elizabeth (Cobb) Sampson.

8. Elizabeth Shaw, born c. 1762, died 6 August 1819 in Carver. She married 22 December 1785 in Middleborough, her second cousin, once removed, Francis Shurtleff, who was born there 3 August 1765, and died 3 December 1852 in Carver, son of Francis & Mary (Shaw) Shurtleff.

9. Dr. Samuel Shaw, born c. 1764.

10. Lucy Shaw, born c. 1768, died 26 November 1833 in Carver. She married 22 December 1785 in Middleborough, her second cousin, Capt. Gideon Shurtleff, who was born 21 October 1762 in Carver, and died there 21 February 1845, son of Abiel & Mary (LeBaron) Shurtleff.

11. Waitstill Shaw, born c. 1770, died 18 June 1781 in Carver.
