Hubbard, Joseph & Mabel Sutlief

Tim’s 4th-great-grandfather, Joseph Hubbard, son of Eliphalet & Abigail (Johnson) Hubbard, was born 22 March 1774 in Middletown, Connecticut, and died 6 January 1856 in Hartsgrove, Ohio.  He married 22 July 1795, Mabel Sutlief, who was born 7 January 1774, and died 3 May 1851 in Hartsgrove.

In 1812 Joseph was a ship’s carpenter “of Sackets Harbor,” a village in New York on Lake Ontario. At some point the family moved to Hartsgrove, located on Lake Erie.

Mabel was a seamstress and dressmaker. According to Mabel’s great-granddaughter, Lina (Hubbard) Moore, “Mabel lost her right hand at the wrist from striking it in some way with a pin which caused blood poison.”

In 2001, Marjean Thomas of California wrote to me that she has a piece of linen cloth that Mabel spun and dyed in 1794 and that when Mabel married Joseph, she wove bed and “testor” curtains.  We have a piece of linen cloth, too, which had been displayed on the fireplace mantel in the Webster house in Provincetown for many years.  When the house was sold it was given to us.

Mabel & Joseph lie buried in Southeast Hartsgrove Cemetery in Hartsgrove, Ohio.
