Freeman, John & Abigail Hopkins

My 5th-great-grandfather, John Freeman, son of Jonathan & Thankful (Linnell) Freeman, was born 10 November 1761 in Orleans, Massachusetts and died c. 1817. He married 22 January 1784 in Eastham, Massachusetts, his second cousin, Abigail Hopkins, who was born there 19 December 1764, and died in November 1829, daughter of Joshua & Rebecca (Sparrow) Hopkins.

Abigail & John were the parents of eleven children:

1. Joshua Freeman, born 8 October 1784 in Eastham, died 19 October 1859 in Orleans. He married 15 November 1806, Elizabeth Chase, who was born 11 December 1784 in Dennis, Massachusetts, and died 6 May 1856 in Orleans, daughter of Abner & Mary (Higgins) Chase. Joshua & Elizabeth were the parents of ten children.

2. Thomas Freeman (my 4th-great-grandfather), born 6 April 1787 in Eastham, died 17 January 1864 in Harwich, Massachusetts. He married in Harwich, 27 December 1810, Roxanna Cash, who was born there 30 November 1789, and died there 28 January 1863, daughter of Samuel & Patience (Phillips) Cash. Thomas & Roxanna were the parents of four children.

3. Lydia Freeman, born 10 March 1789 in Eastham, died 12 December 1866. She married 15 February 1810, Asa Hopkins, who was born 21 October 1786 in Orleans, and died there 6 March 1879, son of Elkanah & Temperance (Snow) Hopkins. Lydia & Asa were the parents of seven children.

4. Rebecca Freeman, born 25 May 1791 in Eastham, died in July 1819.

5. Benjamin Freeman, born 30 June 1793 in Eastham, died 24 October 1845 in Ross, Michigan. He married (as her first husband) c. 1816 in Brewster, Massachusetts, Charlotte Foster Wing, who was born 26 July 1797 in Harwich, and died 6 March 1882 in Port Hudson, Michigan, daughter of John & Hannah (Foster) Wing. Benjamin & Charlotte were the parents of twelve children.

6. Abigail “Nabby” Freeman, born 16 April 1795 in Orleans. She married 20 February 1819 in Orleans, Jedediah Young, who was born 30 September 1793 in Eastham, died 18 December 1873 in Orleans, son of Jedediah & Phebe (Sbow) Young. Nabby & Jedediah were the parents of seven children.

7. John Freeman, born 23 August 1797 in Eastham, died 5 December 1855. He married (as his first wife) 20 November 1824 in Orleans, Mary “Polly” Mayo, who was born c. 1801, and died 13 August 1837. John & Polly were the parents of four daughters.
John married (as his second wife and as her second husband) c. 1838, Sarah “Sally” (Snow) Sparrow, who was born 2 July 1804 in Orleans, and died there 7 March 1879, daughter of Elnathan & Sarah (Cole) Snow, and widow of Jonathan Sparrow. John & Sally were the parents of three children.

8. Polly Freeman, born 11 December 1799 in Eastham, died in July 1819.

9. William Freeman, born 21 January 1802 in Eastham, died 29 April 1885 in Orleans. He married (as his first wife) 4 September 1823 in Orleans, Rebecca Linnell, who was born 5 October 1804 and died 31 December 1823 in childbirth, daughter of Benjamin & Deborah (Crosby) Linnell. William & Rebecca were the parents of one daughter.
William married (as his second wife) 1 January 1829 in Orleans, Abigail Merrick, who was born there 2 January 1806, and died there 29 October 1886, daughter of John & Hannah (Knowles) Merrick. William & Abigail were the parents of six children.

10. James Freeman, born 27 January 1805 in Orleans, died there 12 January 1881. He married (as his first wife) 15 November 1827, Mercy Sparrow, who was born 25 July 1806 in Orleans and died 14 October 1837, daughter of Isaac & Mercy (Snow) Sparrow. James & Mercy were the parents of five children.
James married (as his second wife and as her second husband) Maria Ruth (Newcomb) Freeman, who was born 8 June 1805 in Hampden, Maine, and died 17 December 1883 in Orleans, daughter of Peter & Dorcas (Vickery) Newcomb, and widow of Samuel Freeman. James & Maria were the parents of two sons.

11. Mercy Freeman, born 9 March 1808 in Eastham, died 20 July 1837. She married (as his first wife) 4 February 1830 in Harwich, Capt. George Washington Chase, who was born there 11 June 1802, and died 20 November 1842 in South Hampton, New Hampshire, son of Archelaus & Jedida (Wing) Chase. Mercy & George were the parents of two sons.
