Freeman, Edmund & Sarah Mayo

My 8th-great-grandfather, Lt. Edmund Freeman, son of John & Mercy (Prence) Freeman, was born 3 June 1657 in Eastham, Massachusetts, and died there 11 February 1719. He married (as his second wife) c. 1681, Sarah Mayo, who was born 19 December 1660 in Boston, Massachusetts, and died 5 March 1746 in Eastham, daughter of Samuel & Thomasine (Lumpkin) Mayo.

Edmund had married (as his first wife) in January 1678, Ruth Merrick, who was born 15 May 1653 and died c. 1680, daughter of William & Rebecca (Tracy) Merrick. Edmund is buried in Cove Burying Ground in Eastham.

Edmund & Ruth were the parents of a daughter:

1. Ruth Freeman, born c. 1680 in Eastham, died there 7 June 1728. She married (as his first wife) c. 1700, Israel Doane, who was born c. 1672 in Eastham and died 5 June 1740 in Barnstable, Massachusetts, son of Daniel Doane.


Edmund & Sarah were the parents of eleven children:

1. Sarah Freeman, born c. 1685 in Eastham, died there 12 January 1744. She married (as his first wife) 22 May 1701 in Orleans, Massachusetts, Benjamin Higgins, who was born 15 September 1681 in Eastham, and died there 11 May 1761, son of Benjamin & Lydia (Bangs) Higgins.

2. Isaac Freeman, born c. 1687, died 21 May 1732 in Connecticut. He married (as her first husband) 16 March 1715 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, Bethia Sturgis, who was born 19 February 1695 in Massachusetts, and died there 11 January 1768, daughter of James & Rebecca (Thatcher) Sturgis.

3. Mary Freeman, born 13 March 1687 in Sandwich, Massachusetts, died there 1 June 1734. She married c. 1703, Samuel Hinckley, who was born 24 September 1684 in Barnstable, and died in January 1760 in Brunswick, Maine, son of Samuel & Sarah (Pope) Hinckley.

4. Ebenezer Freeman, born c. 1688 in Eastham, died 11 June 1760. He married 12 October 1710, Abigail Young, who was born 28 December 1688 in Eastham, and died 12 June 1781 in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, daughter of David & Anne (Doane) Young.

5. Experience Freeman, born c. 1691, died 24 April 1728. She married (as his second wife) 13 October 1709 in Boston, Thomas Gross, who was born 4 February 1678 in Hingham, Massachusetts, and died 14 March 1728 in Eastham, son of Simon & Mary (Pond) Gross, and widower of Elizabeth (Hincks) Gross.

6. Mercy Freeman, born c. 1692, died 2 December 1759 in Truro, Massachusetts. She married 14 October 1717, Thomas Cobb, who was born 28 March 1693 in Hingham, and died 9 February 1768 in Truro, son of Richard & Esther (Bates) Cobb.

7. Thankful Freeman, born c. 1694, died before 18 April 1764 in Rochester, Massachusetts. She married 18 October 1718 in Eastham, Jonathan Snow, who was born 30 January 1692 in Harwich, and died after 18 April 1764 in Rochester, son of Nicholas & Lydia (Shaw) Snow.

8. Hannah Freeman, born c. 1698, died 7 July 1751. She married (as his first wife) 10 October 1717 in Eastham, Christian Remick, who was born 16 December 1694 in Orleans, and died before 18 November 1783, son of Abraham & Elizabeth (Freeman) Remick.

9. Elizabeth Freeman, born c. 1701, died 26 March 1737. She married 21 February 1716 in Eastham, Isaac Pepper, who was born there 29 July 1693 and died after 6 July 1743, son of Isaac & Apphia (Freeman) Pepper.

10. Lt. Edmund Freeman (my 7th-great-grandfather), born c. 1702, died 22 July 1782 in Orleans. He married (as his first wife) 22 April 1725 in Eastham, Lois Paine, who was born there 29 September 1705, and died before 30 August 1729, daughter of Nicholas & Hannah (Higgins) Paine.
Edmund married (as his second wife) 25 September 1729 in Eastham, Sarah Sparrow (my 7th-great-grandmother), who was born 20 July 1708 and died 21 August 1790 in Orleans, daughter of Richard & Mercy (Cobb) Sparrow.

11. Rachel Freeman, born c. 1709, died 20 September 1765 in Eastham. She married 2 October 1729 in Harwich, Thomas Gray, who was born c. 1695, and died 12 March 1766, son of John & Susanna (Clark) Gray.
