Atwood, Nathaniel & Zilpha Shurtleff

My 4th-great-grandfather, Nathaniel Atwood, son of Ichabod & Hannah (Shaw) Atwood, was born 28 April 1782 in Middleborough, Massachusetts, and died there 26 January 1858. He married 1 February 1806 in Carver, Massachusetts, his first cousin, Zilpha Shurtleff, who was born 21 July 1782 in Plympton, Massachusetts, and died c. 1860 in Middleborough, daughter of Francis & Mary (Shaw) Shurtleff.

Nathaniel & Zilpha’s mothers were sisters, making them first cousins. They were the parents of five children:

1. Flora Atwood, born 25 February 1807 in Middleborough, died there 12 December 1871. She married 25 July 1830 in Middleborough, Elijah Hackett, who was born there 21 November 1803 and died there 24 July 1889, son of Edward & Hannah (Bennett) Hackett.

2. Gardner Atwood, born 21 October 1809 in Middleborough, died there 25 December 1809.

3. Reuel Atwood (my 3rd-great-grandfather), born 24 June 1811 in Middleborough, died 6 September 1867 in Boston, Massachusetts. He married 25 March 1832 in Carver, his sixth cousin, Abigail Savery Tillson, who was born 20 January 1812 in Middleborough and died 30 July 1883 in Abington, Massachusetts, daughter of Ichabod & Abigail (Bump) Tillson. Reuel & Abigail were the parents of seven children.

4. Polly Atwood, born 5 June 1818 in Middleborough, died there 7 September 1818.

5. Ichabod Francis Atwood, born 13 March 1820 in Middleborough, died there 30 October 1901. He married 18 April 1841 in Middleborough, his half second cousin, Abigail Atwood Thomas, who was born there 21 October 1821, and died there 7 January 1906, daughter of Harvey Cushman & Hannah Cobb (Atwood) Thomas. Ichabod & Abigail were the parents of four children.
