Decided to take a walk along Avery Point this morning… Lots of activity in the marinas and there is definitely a tropical feel to the air, and a feeling of pause and anticipation.
Here’s today’s predicted path for Irene — we’re still smack dab in the middle of it.
I hope to respond to all the thoughtful comments left on my earlier posts soon…
Governor Malloy addressed the state last night and again at noon today. He said that Connecticut is much more forested now than it was when Hurricane Gloria (1985) and the Great Hurricane of 1938 roared through here – many farms have returned to woods. So we may be out of power for some time, as I’m sure many trees will be uprooted. Stocking up on non-perishable food…
The good news is that Irene seems to be weakening a little, but one can never be too certain about what a hurricane will do at the last minute. So we’re hoping for the best and preparing for the worst!
Will come back and check to see how this observation deck does during the storm!
The boat belongs to the University of Connecticut, which has degree programs in Marine Science and Maritime Studies here at its Avery Point campus.
And finally a picture of the Avery Point Lighthouse…
I hear it is weakening and hope that that is the case. But it is good to be prepared. Be safe.
Oh my – I am behind on my responses! Thank you, Sybil. The problems Irene caused still seem to be lingering for some folks, mostly in the form of prolonged power outages and no cable internet connections. Tim & I went over the bridge to New London yesterday and were astonished all over again at the number of trees down and traffic lights still out…
“So we’re hoping for the best and preparing for the worst!” Excellent!
I especially enjoyed the fourth photograph.
Thanks, Laurie! I was wondering what plans that bird in the fourth photograph had for the storm – hope there wasn’t a nest in the bush… It seemed to be part of its territory.
I hope it continues to weaken, Barbara. Really liked your photographs. Looking at the projected map…is NYC supposed to get hit with as much ferocity as your state? Just thinking about Kiah’s boyfriend and friends…
Kathy, we just heard on the news that the mayor of NYC has ordered evacuations for some areas of the city. And they are closing down the subways. I’m trying to find out what Larisa is doing and where she is. I hope Kiah’s boyfriend and friends will be safe…
Hi,
It is good news that it is weakening a little bit, I hope it weakens even further for everyone in the path of this terrible storm. Stay safe.
Thank you, Mags! And now we’re most grateful that Hurricane Katia stayed out at sea!
Great post Barbara. We are all concerned about Irene and with your wonderful photos and accompanying text you put us right there with you.
Thank you, Rosie! Thinking about what I was going to blog about kept me from wringing my hands while waiting for the storm! And there’s nothing like a good brisk walk to crank out some endorphins to calm the nerves… 🙂
Barbara,
Thank you for the up date. Will keep you in a protected pod
Thank you, Jeff! We felt very safe in your protective pod!
Just got back from our final trip to the store and while we were out the kids called us, so now we know everyone’s plans and whereabouts. Tomorrow morning we’ll bring the chair, potted plants and garden ornaments inside and then we’ll be ready for Irene!
