Huntley, John & Jane

Tim’s 9th-great-grandfather, John Huntley, was born c. 1624, and died 16 November 1676 in Lyme, Connecticut. He married (as his second wife) c. 1651, Jane (—), who was born c. c. 1623, and died c. 1669 in Lyme.

John was a businessman, cooper and surveyor who was probably in America before 1647, settling first in Roxbury-Boston, Massachusetts, where “he was in the business of shipping fish to the Barbadoes.”

John married (as his first wife), c. 1642, Sarah (—), who was born c. 1625 and died of small pox c. 1650 in Boston. John & Sarah had no children.

In 1661 John moved to Connecticut Colony and was one of the 30 original settlers of Lyme, which was organized in February 1665. He paid £100 for a 71 acre share in the new settlement.

John married (as his third wife and as her second husband) 3 June 1669 in New London, Connecticut, Mary (Hand) Barnes, who was born c. 1635 and died before 5 July 1687 in Lyme, daughter of John & Alice (Gransden) Hand, and divorced ex-wife of Charles Barnes. After his marriage to Mary, the New London County court fined John £10 for the conviction of fornication before marriage and adultery with Mary when she was still married to her first husband.

On 12 March 1672 John participated in a public protest over the boundary line between Lyme and New London. The opposing groups resorted to doing battle with sticks and staves and the incident became known as the New London-Lyme Riot. John was elected selectman on Lyme on 9 February 1674.
