Hamilton, Benjamin & Rachel Gardner

Tim’s 3rd-great-grandfather, Benjamin Hamilton, son of William & Nellie (Hurd) Hamilton, was born 27 December 1792 in Roxbury, New Jersey, died 28 July 1880 in Ischua, New York. He married c. 1813, Rachel Gardner, who was born 23 April 1797 in Byrum, New Jersey, and died 18 June 1877 in Ischua.

Benjamin & Rachel lie buried in Lot #11, Cuba Cemetery, Cuba, New York.

Rachel was a homemaker and Benjamin was an iron worker, a farmer, and a mason. During the War of 1812 he served guard duty in northern New Jersey, and they lived in that area until about 1825. They then made their way through Tompkins County and then to Cattaraugus County, New York. The following is from the Historical Gazetteer & Biographical Memorial of Cattaraugus County:

Benjamin Hamilton was born in Sussex county, NJ in 1792. He married Rachel Gardner. After birth of Charles and Cornelius he moved to Tompkins county, New York. Benjamin’s father was William Hamilton, a Revolutionary soldier.

Benjamin & Rachel were the parents of seven children:

1. Charles Munson Hamilton (Tim’s 2nd-great-grandfather), born 16 August 1815, died 12 June 1891 in Cuba, New York. He married (as his first wife) 31 December 1840, Eliza Ann Devoe (Tim’s 2nd-great-grandmother), who was born 26 January 1819, and died 6 April 1866 in Hinsdale, New York.
Charles married (as his second wife) 11 March 1868 in Cuba, Rachel Alice Ferris, who was born 28 April 1844 in Howard, New York, and died 1 April 1875 in Hinsdale, daughter of Cyrus & Miriam (Leland) Ferris.

2. Cornelius Hamilton, born 20 January 1817, died 15 December 1898 in Jackson, Michigan. He married c. 1849, Helen S. Smith, who was born 3 December 1820 in Gorham, New York, and died 22 January 1900 in Jefferson, New York.

3. William Hamilton, born 3 October 1818. He married Louisa (—).

4. Phebe C. Hamilton, born 11 August 1820, died 20 November 1884 in Friendship, New York. She married 27 June 1844, Isaac Van Deventer, who was born 5 February 1812in Ovid, New York, and died 13 October 1906 in Hinsdale.

5. Maria Hamilton, born 23 September 1822, died 5 October 1865. She married (as his first wife) 7 January 1846, Sylvanus Tracy, who was born 3 February 1820 in Oxford, New York, and died 12 May 1887 in Reading Center, New York.

6. Amos Gardner Hamilton, born 20 September 1824 in Dix, New York, died 26 April 1896 in Ischua. He married (as his first wife) Elizabeth Louisa Beverly, who was born 1 December 1822 in Oxford, and died 5 October 1889.
Amos married (as his second wife and as her second husband) 3 October 1894 in Montour Falls, New York, Marian (Chapman) Tracy, who was born c. 1841, and died 15 November 1907, widow of Sylvanus Tracy. [Sylvanus Tracy was first married to Amos’ sister Maria Hamilton, and secondly to Marian Chapman, Amos’ future second wife.]

7. Rev. Laurentine Hamilton, born 26 October 1826 in Catlin Hill, New York, died 9 April 1882 in Oakland, California. He married (as his first wife) 3 May 1855 in Gorham, Maine, Isabella Mead, who was born in October 1830 in Brunswick, Maine, and died 24 June 1869 in Oakland, daughter of Asa & Jane (Gould) Mead.
Laurentine married (as his second wife and as her second husband) 27 July 1875, Clara Ferson (Adams) Batchelder, who was born c. 1836, widow of Perez Mann Batchelder.
