Atwood, Nathaniel & Abigail Shaw; Mary Adams

My 5th-great-grandfather, Lt. Nathaniel Atwood, son of Nathaniel & Mary (—) Atwood, was born 3 October 1693 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and died 20 January 1767 in Plympton, Massachusetts. He married (as his second wife and as her second husband) 9 October 1747 in Plympton, Abigail (Shaw) Lucas, who was born c. 1712 and died 27 January 1782 in Plympton, daughter of Benoni & Lydia (Waterman) Shaw.

Nathaniel is also my 6th-great-grandfather! He married (as his first wife) 14 January 1723 in Plymouth, Mary Adams, who was born there 10 November 1704, and died there 6 October 1744, daughter of Francis & Mary (Buck) Adams.

Abigail married (as her first husband and as his second wife) 29 February 1732 in Plymouth, Lt. Samuel Lucas, who was born there 24 July 1689 and died there 26 December 1736, son of Benoni & Repentance (Harlow) Lucas, and widower of Elizabeth (Shaw) Lucas.


Mary & Nathaniel were the parents of ten children:

1. Mercy Atwood, born 4 August 1722 in Plympton, died 12 December 1770 in Plymouth. She married (as her first husband) 23 February 1750 in Plymouth, Josiah Torrey, who was born there 15 May 1729, and died c. 1762, son of Haviland & Elizabeth (Croade) Torrey.
Mercy married (as her second husband) 23 April 1763 in Plymouth, Joseph Warren, who was born there 21 June 1724, and died there 6 September 1770, son of Joseph & Alethea (Chittenden) Warren.

2. Mary Atwood, born 9 December 1723 in Plympton, died 9 June 1808 in Carver, Massachusetts. She married 1 November 1742 in Plympton, Lt. Benjamin Shaw, who was born c. 1715, and died 17 January 1792 in Carver, son of Benoni & Lydia (Waterman) Shaw.

3. Nathaniel Atwood, born 11 December 1725 in Plympton, died 9 October 1804 in Carver. He married (as his first wife) 5 December 1748 in Plympton, his first cousin, Susanna Silence Shurtleff, who was born there 12 January 1728 and died there 29 November 1771, daughter of Barnabas & Jemima (Adams) Shurtleff.
Nathaniel married (as his second wife and as her second husband) 15 September 1776 in Plymouth, Lydia (Timberlake) Boult, who was born there 17 April 1732 and died 1 September 1815 in Carver, widow of Charles Boult.

4. Francis Atwood, born 23 May 1728 in Plympton, died c. 1790. He married 27 August 1747 in Plympton, Elizabeth Lucas, who was born there 22 April 1727, and died 27 March 1794 in Thompson, Connecticut, daughter of Elisha & Margaret (Shaw) Lucas.

5. Sarah Atwood, born 18 May 1733 in Plympton, died 27 October 1826 in Hebron, Maine. She married 3 April 1755 in Plympton, Joseph Barrows, who was born in September 1733 in Carver, and died c. 1820, son of Peleg & Hopestill (Darling) Barrows.

6. Ebenezer Atwood, born 22 May 1735 in Plympton, died c. 1773. He married (as his first wife) 25 November 1762 in Plympton, Leah Churchill, who was born there 17 April 1740, and died 12 August 1769 in Kent, Connecticut, daughter of Ebenezer & Leah (Keene) Churchill.
Ebenezer married (as his second wife and as her second husband) 13 September 1770 in Thompson, Abigail (Bloss) Younglove, who was born c. 1730, daughter of James & Abigail (Younglove) Bloss, and widow of John Younglove.

7. Kezia Atwood, born 1 December 1737 in Plympton, died 12 June 1808 in Taunton, Massachusetts. She married 25 May 1765 in Middleborough, Massachusetts, George Williams, who was born c. 1735, and died 2 February 1812 in Taunton.

8. Capt. William Atwood, born 16 April 1740 in Plympton, died 30 April 1814 in Carver. He married 4 December 1766 in Plympton, Lydia Tillson, who was born there 14 February 1749, and died 5 February 1830 in Carver, daughter of Jonathan & Lucy (Cobb) Tillson.

9. Sgt. Joseph Atwood, born 1 August 1742 in Plympton, died 24 March 1824 in Carver. He married (as his first wife) 17 October 1765 in Plympton, his first cousin, once removed, Elizabeth Shaw, who was born there 4 June 1744, and died there 7 April 1786, daughter of Nathaniel & Hannah (Perkins) Shaw.
Joseph married (as his second wife and as her second husband) 5 February 1789 in Plympton, Content (Rickard) Pratt, who was born there 24 February 1751 and died 14 April 1808 in Carver, daughter of Lemuel & Persis (Harlow) Rickard, and widow of Nathaniel Pratt.

10. Ichabod Atwood (my 5th-great-grandfather), born 24 September 1744 in Plympton, died 24 August 1819 in Middleborough. He married 19 February 1770 in Plympton, his first cousin, once removed, Hannah Shaw, who was born there 31 July 1751, and died 23 February 1848 in Middleborough, daughter of Nathaniel & Hannah (Perkins) Shaw.


Abigail & Samuel were the parents of three children:

1. Samuel Lucas, born 12 November 1732 in Plympton, died c. 1750.

2. Elizabeth Lucas, born 17 February 1735 in Plympton, died 16 April 1806 in Carver. She married 31 January 1749 in Plympton, Lt. John Shaw, who was born 16 September 1727 in Middleborough, and died 28 July 1802 in Carver, son of George & Mercy (Rich) Shaw.

3. Abiel Lucas, born 2 August 1737 in Plympton, died in Gaspé, Quebec. He married 12 February 1758 in Halifax, Massachusetts, Desire Sturtevant, who was born there 9 August 1738, daughter of Lemuel & Deborah (Bryant) Sturtevant.


Abigail & Nathaniel were the parents of three children:

1. Stephen Atwood, born 9 March 1749 in Plympton, died c. 1777. He married 11 May 1769 in Plympton, Janet Murdock, who was born there 5 May 1746, and died 25 June 1832 in Stowe, Vermont, daughter of James & Hannah (Tillson) Murdock.

2. Samuel Atwood (my 4th-great-grandfather), born 19 August 1751 in Plympton, died 7 June 1834 in Carver. He married 27 November 1777 in Plympton, Patience Cobb, who was born in May 1758 in Kingston, Massachusetts, and died 13 September 1841 in Carver, daughter of John & Hannah (Cushman) Cobb.

3. Abigail Atwood, born 7 October 1755 in Plympton, died 29 November 1826 in Carver. She married 7 June 1773 in Plympton, Benjamin Shurtleff, who was born 14 October 1748 in Carver, and died there 8 July 1821, son of Benjamin & Susanna (Cushman) Shurtleff.
