This is the blessing of the Harvest.
The soil is sacred.
Food is sacred.
We are sacred.
We give thanks for the life cut down,
for its generous sacrifice,
that we might be nourished.

oh these beautiful old tools make my soul sing
I’m so glad the painting made your soul sing, Leelah! 💜
I think I’ve seen that photo before, but I know I’ve never read the verse accompanying it. How true! We too often fail to appreciate the plants and animals who give their lives that we might sustain nourishment. Even becoming a vegetarian wouldn’t stop that!
You’ve got that right, Debbie! As Wendell Berry wrote: “To live, we must daily break the body and shed the blood of Creation. When we do this knowingly, lovingly, skillfully, reverently, it is a sacrament. When we do it ignorantly, greedily, clumsily, destructively, it is a desecration.”
Happy Lammas Day!
Thank you, Ally! I hope you enjoyed yours, too!
Beautiful and wise words. 🙂
I’m glad you appreciated them, Frank. 🙂
I like the painting and the words chosen today.
So happy you enjoyed them, TD. 🙂
It’s good to be grateful for the harvest, for without it and the workers who break their backs tending and reaping what it yields, where would we be?
I agree. Without all the hard work of migrant agricultural workers the shelves in our grocery stores would be empty. Our lives depend on them and we owe them our gratitude.
