And the world cannot be discovered by a journey of miles, no matter how long, but only by a spiritual journey, a journey of one inch, very arduous and humbling and joyful, by which we arrive at the ground at our feet, and learn to be at home.
~ Wendell Berry
(The Unforeseen Wilderness)
As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.
~ Henry David Thoreau

Barbara,
Once again you have captured the essence of words with a painting or vise versa… beautiful.
I still don’t understand why I always have to come find your pages.. but always glad I do go look!
Thank you, Jeff!

Hi,
What a fantastic picture, looking through down to the wide opens spaces, magnificent and really beautiful words today.
Thank you, Mags – it is an unusual painting and suggestive of so much…
Oh, I wish I could be there! We have big caves near St. Martins in New Brunswick where you can go deep into the cave and look back out on the ocean as if the cave were a window… reminds me of this. Jane
Oh Jane, the scene you’re describing sounds so breathtaking! Would love to see the caves in New Brunswick some day…
I had to look up the painting and painter – not familiar with either. That’s quite something! 🙂
Wikimedia Commons is full of surprises – could spend all day making random searches there! 🙂
That’s an amazing picture. wow! I could just keep staring at it. Iterating over the thoughts for building up a deep mental path is something I needed to know, for someone to tell me. Thanks for this one Barbara. 🙂
That’s wonderful that Thoreau’s words were what you needed, Sonali – I’m so glad the connection was made. 🙂 That’s what is so wonderful about the written word – it can be there to guide us long after the writer has left this world!
Love the painting. Is that a bell on the right hand side?
And love the quotes especially the Thoreau one.
Yes, that’s a bell! I wonder what it sounds like when the wind moves it… Thoreau offers so much wisdom with his observations – it’s as if he’s describing cognitive therapy in a lyrical way…
